How Spam Traps Work and Where they come from.

Regardless of how a spam is technically defined, we can probably agree it’s unwanted email, and we don’t like it, actually nobody likes it.

spam trapsIn the fight against spam, some organizations use spam traps to find and block spammers. A spam trap is an email address that’s not actively used, but is actively monitored. If a spam trap receives an email, something is rotten in Denmark, because that email address never opted in to receive emails.

There are many, many spam traps out there, and they’re being managed by everyone from big anti-spam organizations like Spamhaus and SURBL, to security companies like TrendMicro and McAfee, to nation-wide ISPs and corporate email servers. As such, the proliferation and proven accuracy of spam traps makes it impossible to ignore alerts when one of our users hits a trap. Our compliance team reaches out to help, but this often evokes the question, “How did a spam trap get on my list?”

What is a Catch All email address why is it “Unknown”.

What is a Catch All email address ?

What is a Catch All E-mail address or “Unknown” email? When you verify an email address to determine if it’s valid or invalid, sometimes you can’t get an accurate response, so the email is labeled this way.

Catch All Email

The largest percentages of these Unknowns are Catch All, basically this e-mail addresses servers accept all emails.

email address imageThe best way to explain this is to use the analogy of you receiving a letter at your house, delivered to your mailbox. Compared to if you live in a condo development with hundreds of different people but one main Mail-room to ACCEPT all mail.

Your house has one single address that the mail can only be delivered to, your mailbox, if you don’t live their anymore, then the mailman returns to sender (bounce back).

A condo on the other hand has one basic mail room for everyone, so all mail is accepted and then gets distributed once a gets inside. At the condo, some people may have moved, don’t live their anymore etc, but the mail was ACCEPTED. This would be where email verification ends, so we are not sure.

Still getting Hard Bounced emails, even after cleaning , find out why!

Still have Hard Bounced Emails

There are many reasons why you can get hard bounced emails.

bounced emails, return to senderIf you’re IP, domain and email campaign (copy) are clean and you’re still getting bounced e-mails, then most likely your list is not clean or clean enough!

However usually the majority of the time emails bounce back after cleaning is that your IP, Domain or both are dirty and are being blocked by the receiving servers.

Basically the servers bounced emails back as a precaution because they are not accepting anything from your IP or domain. If your IP or Domain is flagged as questionable or spamming then the receiving server simply bounces back any request (or email you send) to their servers.

Most servers also don’t allow emails that are spammy looking (content in body of email) as well so if your spam score is quite high they will also reject your email and bounce it back.
